Book Description

As a geographer and historian, Glen Conner became aware that many of the rural communities he had known through the years were changing. All were devolving, some even were losing their identity, and others had already faded into the past. Awareness of one’s sense of place develops when we become an adult. It is the feeling that connects a person with a specific place—a feeling that does not exist for any other location. This place is where our roots take hold. It is sustained and enhanced by the feeling of belonging engendered by the community itself.

Our Sense of Place describes the history of seventy named locations that, at one time, existed within one small Kentucky county—Allen County. Each community was occupied by people who were anchored there by their sense of place. This is their story.

Author

GLEN CONNER was born and reared in a rural community named Halifax. After college, he had a 23-year career in the U.S. Air Force that was followed by a 24-year career in the Department of Geography and Geology at Western Kentucky University, where he taught meteorology and physical geography.

After those two careers, he began historical research and has published three books: ‘Til Freedom Came, Frontiersmen in the War of 1812, and The Burial Ground. All three are histories of both the people and the events that shaped local developments.

The Kentucky Historical Society presented him with their Award of Distinction in 2018. It recognized his work over many years as a contributing member of the Allen County Historical Society in the discovery and preservation of local history. He continues in this effort, which satisfies his curiosity and brings the excitement of discovery.
